Beaverton City Library goes “Beyond Fake News”

Libraries have been in the information business a long time, and have helped millions of people find accurate, timely and relevant answers for every kind of question. In today’s world of conflicting headlines, the library is more important than ever to help sort through the noise.

On Thursday, November 9, 7-8:30 p.m., Beaverton City Library (12375 SW 5th St) hosts “Beyond Fake News: How We Find Accurate Information About the World.” This conversation, led by librarian Kelly McElroy, gives Oregonians a chance to consider their own practices and values around news consumption.

On both national and local levels, Oregonians have seen how the news can both represent and misrepresent the facts at hand. From debate over local opinions on the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge to the discourse around “alternative facts,” it can seem difficult to find current and accurate information to use as we make decisions in our communities. Learn new ways to get the information you need.

Beaverton Library Foundation celebrates Summer Reading!

With this year’s theme “Build a Better World”, Beaverton families spent lots of time reading and learning this summer. More than 5400 kids and 2100 teens participated in this year’s summer reading program which is sponsored by the Beaverton Library Foundation.

“Children who read through the summer months are less likely to start school behind in the fall” noted Youth Services Manager Victoria Campbell. “The support that we receive from the Beaverton Library Foundation allows us to offer a world-class summer reading program for local kids and their families. We couldn’t do it without the Foundation’s partnership.”

Loud in the Library 2016

The Beaverton Library Foundation, with support from library staff, hosted Loud in the Library, a New Year’s Eve party, on Saturday, December 31. The Foundation had hoped to attract 300 people for this first-time event, and were absolutely thrilled when more than 400 people came, hailing from Portland, Atlanta, San Francisco and Beaverton. Party revelers enjoyed great food and drinks from Uptown Market, danced to tunes provided by The Party Doctor, played mini golf, lasertag and other games from Parties, Inc., and cheered a midnight balloon drop in the library stairwell. The entire main library was transformed as guests enjoyed life-sized Jenga, Kerplunk and Connect Four while waiting for a turn at Cornhole, Bingo, Monopoly, Scrabble, Hot Wheels race track, Catch Phrase and more. One attendee shared, “I was rushed off my feet the whole time, and enjoyed every minute.” We even spotted a few folks reading books in the stacks, and had a marriage proposal on the dance floor (she said yes). There was something for everyone!

Best of all, the Beaverton Library Foundation raised more than $6,000 for the Beaverton Library Foundation in support of the library’s Summer Reading program. The Foundation was thrilled to have the sponsorship support from Villa Sport, Banner Bank, FFA Architecture + Interiors, Koeber’s Interiors, LCD, and On Point Community Credit Union. We heard from party attendees and other community members how much they appreciated having a safe, fun place to ring in the new year here in Beaverton. This is truly a unique community event and plans are already underway for next New Year’s Eve. We hope you’ll join us as we get Loud in the Library on December 31, 2017! Tickets will be available spring 2017 at www.BeavertonLibraryFoundation.org/NYE.
